I had the opportunity to spend my birthday in Kundasang this year. My friend Jess recommended Hooga Cafe @ Kundasang Farm Ville, simply known as Hooga Cafe. It’s about a 1.9 km drive from Sosodikon Hill.
Hooga Cafe is one of the best dining spots in Kundasang, serving western and Asian cuisines. It has lovely cake options as well, making it ideal for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and more. Hooga Cafe is especially popular for its beautiful decor, and well-lit, romantic, and cosy setting.
Being one of Kundasang’s highly praised local attractions, Hooga Cafe might be worth your time. Should you drop by? I’ll share my experience at Hooga Cafe in this post, so read on to help you decide whether or not to add the restaurant to your Kundasang travel itinerary.
A Spacious Restaurant With Bright Lights and Cute Decor
Let’s cut to the chase; Hooga Cafe is one of Kundasang’s most hyped restaurants. What makes it stand out is its instagrammable aesthetic. Many people come to Hooga Cafe for its decor and cosy restaurant setting. To date, Hooga Cafe has decent online ratings, although they could’ve been better.
Hooga Cafe is a good place to grab lunch, but many people like visiting the restaurant for dinner. At dawn, the restaurant is lit with bright, colourful lights.
The Chinese New Year vibe was still quite strong around the time of my visit. When I arrived at the restaurant, I noticed that the restaurant was decorated with Chinese lanterns and red twinkle lights. I think the restaurant changes its decorations occasionally, depending on the time of the year.
Explore the Restaurant’s Lovely Surroundings
The restaurant’s front porch is spacious, and it has many lovely decorations. Many people like to take pictures with the restaurant’s pink ice cream bus and lovely birdcage pergola.
Since it was my birthday, I sat in the birdcage pergola with Jess’ aunt (who also had her birthday around the same time) and took memorable photos of us and our cakes.
We got our cakes from the restaurant. I was happy to find Red Velvet and carrot cake at the restaurant – they’re my favourites.
Enjoy a Meal or a Special Celebration
Hooga Cafe has good choices of food and drinks on its menu. I had a plate of Nasi Lemak for dinner and enjoyed it.
Contrary to what some others have said about the restaurant’s poor food quality, I thought the food was satisfactory.
As for the cakes, I thought they were excellent and they came with candles.
As discussed earlier, I took the cakes to the birdcage pergola outside for some photo taking. I brought the cakes back in right after.
The restaurant played a birthday song for another celebrant that night. I believe it was done upon request.
Cool Down With an Ice Cream
Do you know that Hooga Cafe has ice cream? There’s a pink ice cream bus at the entrance of the restaurant.
I love ice cream, but I didn’t get to try the ice cream at Hooga Cafe. I thought the counter was closed. But all I needed to do was ring the bell to get someone to take my order. The ice cream bus had many ice cream options, mostly stick ice creams.
No ice cream, no problem. On the bright side, I managed to capture memorable photos of the ice cream bus.
Next to the bus are canopy umbrellas where people can enjoy their ice cream. There are also ice cream statues and colourful artificial trees nearby. Above the bus, customers will find a seating area with a panoramic view.
Visit Kundasang Farm Ville
Hooga Cafe is located at Kundasang Farm Ville. Kundasang Farm Ville is especially popular among families with little children. With a fee, visitors can enter Kundasang Farm Ville to take photos with cute decorations and explore its mini garden.
Strawberry picking is allowed at Kundasang Farm Ville but is chargeable. Since Kundasang Farm Ville is an indoor attraction, visitors can visit it at night, too.
I thought the entrance fee for the Kundasang Farm Ville was a little high, so I decided to give it a pass.
Is Hooga Cafe Worth Visiting?
Hooga Cafe is worth visiting if you’re hungry and need to stop by for a meal in the Kundasang hill resort area, especially at night. It’s also ideal for special celebrations like birthdays or anniversaries. Those looking to take Instagrammable photos may like Hooga Cafe.
In terms of food quality, I thought it was decent, in general. My meal was good and so were the cakes I had on my birthday. However, I learnt that the food quality isn’t always consistent, hence some negative reviews given by other customers.
Facility-wise, it’s good. The toilet was clean during my visit, the restaurant’s chairs and tables were comfortable, the handwashing sink was clean, and the restaurant’s dining area and front porch looked clean. As for the restaurant’s staff, they were friendly and attentive.
Would I Return to Hooga Cafe?
I would return to Hooga Cafe if I had the chance to revisit Kundasang. Overall, I think it’s a nice restaurant. It has a lovely atmosphere, although it can get quite noisy sometimes. The restaurant did a pretty good job with its decor and cakes.
Since I didn’t manage to get ice cream during my last visit, it’s a good excuse to return to Hooga Cafe for the second time.
Do I recommend Hooga Cafe? Yes, absolutely. You may find some negative online reviews regarding the food, but don’t let them deter you from stopping by Hooga Cafe. If you don’t order the restaurant’s main course options, at least give the cakes a try. The Red Velvet and carrot cakes are delicious.
